establishing a
graduate student scholarship. Our scholarship funds and intern
programs at Virginia Tech and at other universities around the country
show our dedication to the geotechnical practice and our desire to

Fugro Wins Contract in
Norfolk, Virginia
Fugro has been awarded a
$5 million contract for geotechnical engineering services for the Craney
Island Eastward Expansion project and has established a permanent office
in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. As the lead geotechnical engineer for the
Craney Island project, Fugro is conducting marine geotechnical site
investigations and engineering studies for the Eastward Expansion of the
Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area (CIDMMA) and the Craney
Island Marine Terminal (CIMT) project in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Fugro's new offices located at the Norfolk, Virginia, World Trade Center
and the company's operations on the East Coast of North America will be
referred to as "Fugro Atlantic".
The
Craney Island Eastward Expansion project is being jointly developed by
the Virginia Port Authority and the United States Army Corps of
Engineers (USACE). The purpose of the project is to add dredge disposal
capacity to the USACE-operated CIDMMA and to develop the CIMT for the
Port Authority.
With
the initial phase of field investigation (conducted in conjunction with
Fugro Seacore, Ltd, Fugro Alluvial Offshore Limited, and Fugro
Engineers, BV) completed in September 2007, Fugro is developing
geotechnical design criteria and preparing preliminary designs for
various types of retaining structures, the landfill reclamation, and
ground improvement aspects of the project. Fugro is also synthesizing
geologic and exploration data into a regional GIS database of the lower
James River and Chesapeake Bay region.
Fugro's specialized geotechnical services that have been applied to Gulf
Coast, West Coast, and worldwide coastal infrastructure developments are
now available for similar projects on the East Coast of North America.
